Metacomprehension Responses Are Affected by Feedback

Abstract

How well people believe that they understand information, so-called metacomprehension, is important for education. If someone believes that they have mastered the material in a chapter, they may not study the material any further. The effects of taking an assessment and finding out the score on self-rated understanding, interest, and knowledge were measured. Finding out one's score lowered people's assessments of their understanding, particularly for those scoring low on the assessment, as well as other metacognitive ratings. These self-ratings were also used to predict scores on a future assessment and were similar in their diagnostic value regardless of when elicited.
