"What I See Every Day": Visual Meaning-Making and Interpretive Engagement in a PhotoVoice Project With Black College Men

Abstract

This paper draws upon Drew and Guillemin’s visual meaning and interpretive engagement framework in the analysis of a photovoice project with Black cisgender, heterosexual and queer college men. In this paper, I examine the multiple sites of meaning-making as Black men visually document their experiences as raced, gendered, and sexualized bodies. First, I will examine participants’ explanations of the image production process and the social meanings of the images. Next, I pay attention to the actual photos and engage in a critical visual analysis of the images, examining the content of the photos and the common image themes. Finally, themes will then be situated and analyzed using relevant theoretical frameworks. Implications for educators, researchers and policymakers will be addressed.
