Exploring the Psychometric Properties of Clinical Decision-Making Items

Abstract

This study investigates the psychometric properties of the newly developed Clinical Decision-Making (CDM) items in a medical licensure examination. Preliminary results show that CDM items tend to be more difficult and have higher discrimination values than multiple choice question (MCQ) items. Examinees also spent more time on CDM items. The dichotomous CDM items yielded slightly more item information at the higher ability levels and weighted information over all ability levels. The results also show evidence of construct equivalence of the two types of items. Final analysis will be conducted with full data and by including polytomous CDM items. CDM items are introduced and psychometric properties of the CDM items are discussed based on the preliminary results.
