Middle School Music and Arts Uptake and Achievement in the United States: Evidence From the 2016 NAEP

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand how 2016 Visual Arts and Music NAEP scores varied as by student level characteristics and by enrollment in the specific arts subject being tested. As NAEP tests all students regardless of enrollment in music or arts courses, arts educators are left without clear data on how the students they actually reach perform on the Arts NAEP compared to the national averages. As expected, arts students outperform their non-arts peers. However, there was significant score variation by race/ethnicity, family SES, ELL, IEP/504, and gender even after controlling for arts study. In music, the kind of music studied (e.g., band/choir/orchestra vs. nonperformance general music classes) was salient: ensemble students significantly outperformed general music students.
