The Power of Possibilities: How Hip-Hop Lives in My Classroom

Abstract

In this paper, I discuss the two components of a course I created called "Advancing the Academic Success of Black Males (HipHop music and mentoring) as elements in helping my students understand how to advance the success of Black males in academic and social settings. I also explore how my students learn to process, embrace, and critically understand a spectrum of HipHop narratives by applying lessons learned from other texts and their interactions with their mentees. Finally, this paper illustrates to readers how my standpoint as a HipHop Feminist impacts my pedagogy and care in the preparation of teachers and school personnel.
