Enhancing Early Numeracy Education in Community-Based Outreach Centers

Abstract

In this qualitative research, we describe outcomes from an early numeracy professional development (PD) program offered to individuals who provide free community-based programming for young children. The PD introduces the five-week XX program which supports the development of early numeracy in children prior to formal schooling through purposeful play. Where numerous studies have demonstrated positive results of teaching numeracy at a young age, others suggest that adults engaging with young children have limited formal training in early numeracy and are reluctant to engage in number play. XX addresses both these issues. Survey data suggests that the PD had an impact on the extent to which numeracy was being included in programming compared to incidences prior to participating in the PD.
