This study examined how a technique for creative problem solving could be utilized in a context related to identity at an art education university course to promote meaningful individual and collaborative artmaking. Qualitative analysis of course context development showed that flexible thinking tools can facilitate curriculum design for problem-based meaningful artmaking. Analysis of individual and collaborative artmaking indicated that even though many students managed to produce personally meaningful symbolism, the level of student engagement with the strategies of meaningful artmaking differed. Creating a collaborative installation presented conceptual and practical challenges and pointed out that engaging in dialogue to make thinking visible to others could contribute to collaborative artmaking for meaning making.
