Involving teachers when redesigning and modernizing traditional learning environments has been pointed out as important for successful change. A case study was carried out in which secondary school teachers evaluated a virtual 3D multizone flexible learning environment, a type of pre-occupancy evaluation in which they indicated the possibilities and challenges in the learning environment for their teaching. The virtual walk-throughs were videotaped and analyzed. The results showed two major themes: student grouping and activities. Grouping was a vital condition that determined possible activities, where teachers considered new possibilities for organizing activities, rather than creating new ones. The paper shows a need for more research on social and organizational dimensions of flexible learning environments.
