The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore preschool children’s experience of interactive read-alouds designed to promote social emotional learning. Studying my teaching in the preschool classroom, I developed a curriculum. This work is the first phase of a design-based research study. The research question was: What is the social emotional experience of children in this interactive read-aloud program, which is intentionally designed to guide their learning? Data was obtained through participant observation of whole group read-alouds and small group projects. The findings focused on the experiences of two of my students as they developed self-awareness, social awareness, and self-management skills. This case study revealed the power to assist children in comprehending themselves and others.
