Diversifying the Professoriate: Analysis of Practices That Support Recruitment and Retention of Racially Minoritized Faculty

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Racially minoritized faculty work in toxic environments where they and their work are often undervalued and challenged, yet they must find a way to thrive if they want to remain in the professoriate. If they fail, that failure is often viewed as individual rather than institutional. In this systematic literature review of 55 publications from the last decade (2008–2018), we take up the question of practices and policies for recruiting and retaining racially minoritized faculty. We find that institutions engage in symbolic and progressive efforts, but transformative efforts create the most sustained improvement in recruiting and retaining racially minoritized faculty. These findings offer a map for institutions that not only want to diversify the professoriate, but also transform the academy.
