Citizenship Education and Human Rights: Analysis of Class Sessions and Principals' Commitment Toward Children's Governance

Abstract

This research aims to assess how education for citizenship, human rights and peace is carried out within the official curriculum of primary schools. A systematic observation instrument has been developed and validated by judges to capture the classroom dynamics and to define and evaluate the standards and indicators of a democratic culture in the classroom. Data collected in 21 primary schools in Catalonia (Spain) proved that there is a tendency to encourage the involvement of children, to use a participatory communication style, and to develop their critical spirit when it comes to working on issues related to human rights, citizenship and peace. While diversity management is the indicator that offers lower scores.
