Abstract

This study critically delves into the case of “masculinity in crisis” in China and South Korea. We inquire as to whether masculinity is truly in crisis and how we understand the discourses about masculinity in both societies, drawing on Connell’s (2005) hegemonic masculinity. We take up Bakhtin’s (1981) notion of heteroglossia to articulate multiple voices in the social discourses. This paper provides the context of specific situations in each country with analysis of these discourses. This study contributes to educational research and practice drawn on the theoretical perspective of hegemonic masculinity. Furthermore, the analysis of masculinity in a non-Western context sheds light on variations of hegemonic masculinity and their diverse dimensions as local and global forces intersect and interact.
