Value, Vulnerability, and Voice: A Review of Research Assent

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Absence from research can perpetuate exclusion from society. This presentation focuses on research assent for individuals with significant disabilities. Assent is a term used with those deemed vulnerable, for whom modifications and additional considerations are required to request their voluntary agreement to participate in research. We speak to an international audience who oversee social science research (e.g., human research ethics committees and institutional review boards), as well as offer guidance to researchers considering inclusive research but for whom practical considerations are required. Practical suggestions are offered based on reviewed literature and the authors’ research experiences. The aim is to enhance diversity within research generative of a more robust contribution to knowledge.
