Learning Indigenous Epistemology, Developing Critical Consciousness, and Reimagining Vocation Through Experiential Education in Rural Fiji

Abstract

The purposes of study are to: 1) understand which aspects of experiential education (EE) in rural Fiji facilitated engagement with indigenous epistemology; 2) understand how emergent critical consciousness of indigenous epistemology impacts participants’ worldview; and 3) understand how EE shaped participants’ vocational path. This study was situated in EE theory and critical pedagogy. The researcher engaged with 20 participants during a month-long experiential education course in rural Fiji. Data was collected through culturally responsive arts-based research. Findings indicate that that participants developed critical consciousness through engagement with indigenous epistemology. Emergent critical consciousness coupled with new skills led to a reimagination of vocation. Findings suggest educators/researchers may leverage EE to foster engagement with indigenous epistemologies as a vehicle for transformation.
