Measuring Student Engagement in a Flexible Learning Environment

Abstract

Student engagement has been researched from multiple perspectives in the education literature and there is considerable debate regarding the various measures available for student engagement. Currently there is not a self-report instrument available to evaluate elementary students’ engagement. This current study presents a newly developed instrument designed to measure student engagement at the elementary level as a multidimensional construct measuring: cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. This study reports on the preliminary development and validation of a 42-item, multidimensional, self-report measure of elementary students’ engagement. The Student Engagement Student Survey (SESS) was piloted with 3rd and 4th graders = (N = 202). Confirmatory factor analyses indicated a six-factor model provided the best fit for current data. Discussions and implications are presented.
