A Systematic Review of the Collaboration, Methodology, and Dissemination of Interprofessional Education Research

Abstract

The purpose of this interprofessional education systematic review is to 1) better understand which disciplines are leading IPE initiatives, 2) identify which research methodologies are informing the IPE literature, and 3) determine the visibility of IPE research based on journal type. Medical professionals, nurses, and pharmacists are leading IPE initiatives, with most studies implementing quantitative or mixed-methods analytic techniques. In addition, IPE research is most frequently being published in interdisciplinary journals, potentially limiting the visibility for academics who read discipline-specific journals. By identifying areas of opportunity to expand discipline involvement, methodologies, and journals that IPE research is currently being published in, there is an opportunity for health professionals to continue producing rigorous research to better understand interprofessional education.
