Despite the exponential growth of online programs, minimal research has been conducted to address specific tools to help develop multiple facets of connectedness in distance students. This explanatory case study sought to determine the effectiveness of personalized, instructor-made videos in creating a sense of community and connectedness within one online classroom. Using the Community of Inquiry (COI) model, survey and interview data collected from doctoral students enrolled in an online program at a Southern research university was examined to determine the role video instruction has in developing cognitive, social, and teaching presence. Results showed that instructor-made videos underpinned by the concept of “just-in-time” teaching contribute to the development of each
type of presence as described in the COI model.
