The Challenge of Pursuing Social Relationships at Institutional Transitions

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

School transitions are events in which changes in social relations among students and between students and teachers are unavoidable, which presents a challenge on a personal, emotional and social level as students face the situation, build relationships with new classmates and teachers and form a class community; this may also be reflected in expectations of and attitudes towards the school and learning.
Using data from a longitudinal study, the paper describes how the perception of social relationships in school at the two transitions of the Austrian compulsory school system (from elementary school to lower secondary school and from lower secondary school to upper secondary school) changes and the significance it has for the course of education during lower secondary education.
