The purpose of this studywas to determine if cognitive and non-cognitive variables are predictors of academic performance among African American male and female student-athletes at Division I institutions. In this study, the cognitive variables are standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) and college GPA. The non-cognitive variables consist of academic motivation and athletic motivation. The data analysis revealed that neither athletic motivation nor academic motivation was a predictor of academic performance. The subscores of academic motivation had little to no significance towards GPA. However, when incorporating descriptive variables, the researcher found that gender, mother’s highest level of education, and years of eligibility had a significant difference in academic performance as measured by GPA.
