Understanding the Muslim and Jewish Minority Experience in the Public K–12 Classroom

Abstract

The purpose of this poster presentation is to share the intersectionality and differences we unearthed through our collaborative autoethnographic self-study. In our self-study, we explored, compared, and contrasted the shared experiences of discrimination and marginalization we handled as Muslim and Jewish educators within the predominantly Christian-based education climate in Florida. Religious discrimination has been an underlining issue that has continuously created barriers and divided society. This is a collaborative effort to bring forth coherency for greater awareness of and to advocate for the equity of minority religious students in relation to classroom teachers. To our knowledge, there has been no study published from this collaborative lens. The implications of this study can inform the work of teacher educators and researchers.
