Family Leadership and Biliteracy: Using Freire's Philosophy

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The current work of the families who are part of “A Resource in Serving Equality” (ARISE) a grass-roots organization in south Texas, illustrates emancipatory pedagogy echoed by Paulo Freire’s work and models the power, intelligence and persistence in communities that are poor in material goods but rich in human resources. ARISE was the first community organization to embrace the Education CAFE model supported by the Intercultural Research Development Association and is now serving as a mentor to new Education CAFEs. This presentation reports on the results of a multi-year case study on family leadership in ARISE and its work in supporting parent advocacy and leadership for quality bilingual education.
