Current National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) presentations and literature often overlook effect size calculations when analyzing differences between groups. Reporting effect size calculations can assist stakeholders in understanding any differences between states, student groups, and between subjects and grades. There is a known difference in reading assessment results between males and females; this study focuses on understanding that difference further. Using state level results from the fourth and eighth grade NAEP reading assessments, this study calculates effect sizes for each participating jurisdiction and compares them to the national-public effect size. Few jurisdictions showed effects in fourth grade reading; however, effects were more pronounced in eighth grade reading, with many jurisdictions having effects larger than the National Public-school average.
