The Impact of a Quiet Time Program in a High-Performing, High-Stress Urban High School

Abstract

This article explores the impact of a Quiet Time program in a high performing, high stress urban high school located on the West Coast. The Quiet Time program provides a 15-minute period at the beginning of class for students to practice Transcendental Meditation or engage in silent reading. Students who were in the treatment group learned to meditate and did a second 15-minute meditation each day either at home or during their advisory period. The study examined the impact of Quiet Time on students’ stress, anxiety, and self esteem in a randomized controlled trial .
