How the Design of Learning Analytics Dashboards Influences Motivation and Statistics Anxiety

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Based on the achievement goal theory, this study used a concurrent triangulation design to investigate the influence of two types of learning analytics dashboards – predictive and descriptive – on graduate students’ motivation, statistics anxiety, and learning performance in an online statistics course in two semesters: Fall 2018 (Study 1: N =102) and Spring 2019 (Study 2: N = 77). Participants were randomly assigned into one of three groups: a) predictive b) descriptive, or c) control. Semi-structured interviews and pre and post measures of motivation and statistics anxiety indicate that the predictive dashboard was beneficial for learners with higher prior intrinsic goal orientation and the descriptive dashboard reduced learners’ interpretation anxiety.
