Effectiveness of a STEM Teacher Residency Program in Urban School Context

Abstract

The Jacksonville Teacher Residency Program (JTR) provides a 2-year path to teaching for elementary and secondary teachers in STEM classrooms in urban contexts, providing support through teacher induction. JTR represents a deep partnership between the local school district, schools, community agencies, and university. The effectiveness of this program was measured through student achievement data, student academic self-concept surveys, intercultural sensitivity scales, and a qualitative analysis of responses to classroom management surveys. The data indicate that the JTR model for teacher induction is effective in meeting the academic needs of students in urban contexts and supplying the local school district with highly qualified STEM teachers.
