Validation of the Scientific Imagination Test–Verbal: A Learning Progression Approach

Abstract

This study aimed to validate the Scientific Imagination Test-Verbal (SIT-Verbal) for its development based on a learning progression (LP) approach. Participants in this study were selected from Southern Taiwan, which included 616 undergraduates. The SIT-Verbal has covered four key components of scientific imagination process: brainstorming, association transformation/elaboration and conceptualization/organization/formation. The multiple validities of the SIT-Verbal were assessed by using the Rasch partial credit model. The results indicated that the SIT-Verbal showed good model-data fit and supported students’ scientific imagination progressed “from brainstorming, association, transformation/elaboration, to conceptualization/organization/formation.” Additionally, it also showed that the SIT-Verbal was suitable for measuring students’ scientific imagination at the university’s level. The conclusion of the study also provided abundant information to verify the SIT-Verbal.
