Anesthesia Learning in the Digital Age: Are Program Directors and Residents on the Same Page?

Abstract

In the digital age, textbooks and traditional didactics have been supplemented or supplanted by multiple online modalities. We sought to identify whether an “educational gap” exists between anesthesiology program directors (PDs) and trainees regarding what is assigned and what is used. This was a national cross-sectional survey conducted in the United States. Eighty-five PDs completed the survey, a 57% response rate. A total of 503 residents responded from out of 1414 who received it, a 36% rate. There is a discrepancy between PD and resident views on where and how learning occurs. Although popular among residents, podcasts are rarely assigned by programs. Residents indicated a variety of learning preferences, however, textbook and online reading were associated with higher in-training-exam scores.
