The Influence of Informal Learning Environments and Experiences on Preservice Secondary STEM Teachers

Abstract

Our qualitative multiple-case study examines how informal learning environments and experiences (ILE&Es) can serve as a vehicle for the recruitment and preparation of secondary preservice STEM teachers (SPSTs). This study stems from a multi-year NSF funded project evaluating Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program outcomes at 8 public universities in Texas. Specifically, we conducted focus group and individual semi-structured interviews with Noyce and Non-Noyce scholarship recipients. Additional data sources included: archival information, field notes, and write-ups. Our analysis identified six types of ILE&Es, which we further synthesized into two themes: Career Interest and ILE&Es that Enhance Teacher Preparation. Overall, ILE&Es emerged as an important component shaping SPSTs career interest and preparation.
