Focusing on the Practice of Distributed Leadership: To What Extent School and Country Contexts Matter?

Abstract

This study adopted the complex survey data analysis using the 2013 Teaching and Learning International Survey. This study first constructed the latent variables to reveal to what extent the three position-based human units—the principal, the management team, and teachers—led nine leadership functions. Then a resampling approach with Balanced Replicate Weights was used to disclose how three groups lead each of the 17 leadership tasks. Finally, a Structural Equation Model helped answer the associations among contextual factors and distributed leadership operation. The study found distributed leadership is operated differently in 32 countries, with the principal, the management team, and teachers lead for varied leadership functions. Finally, both country and school contextual factors are related to how leadership is distributed.
