Preparing Teachers for Multicultural, Equity, and Social Justice Teaching: A Systematic Review of Assessment Tools

Abstract

This paper provides a systematic review of 37 assessment tools designed to capture varying aspects of teaching for equity, social justice, and diversity. This review organizes existing tools into three categories based on the phenomenon captured and then describes the tool and examines the conceptual base, evidence regarding quality, and intended uses of the tool. Findings suggest that only a small number of tools explicitly captured the critical and advocacy aspects of teaching for equity and social justice. Additionally, only some tools clearly elaborated a systematic and reproducible process of tool development based on empirical evidence. This study evaluates existing assessment tools to facilitate the selection for particular program purposes and suggests that tool development must attend to quality issues.
