A Pedagogy of Spirituality and Hope for Faculty in Higher Education

Abstract

The authors explore the ways in which a pedagogy of spirituality and hope can respond to the lived experiences of faculty in higher education. They engaged in discourse analysis and comparative collaboration to critically examine five published works of the late Caribbean educator, Dr. Jennifer Lavia. Lavia’s pedagogy outlined a revitalized discursive methodology that will build personal capacities and enhance the potential of a marginalized society. She espoused the establishment of supportive spaces in all levels of higher educational institutions, where faculty can freely express and share their thoughts and experiences and create healing narratives. This pedagogy can potentially effect positive change in Caribbean higher education systems by unearthing the silenced voices of faculty and opening new avenues of discourse.
