Universities expect technology-enhanced active learning classrooms (ALCs) to improve teaching and learning. This study examines how student CSCL was carried out in ALCs based on the Pedagogy-Space-Technology framework. Through instructor and student interviews, classroom observation, analysis of classroom recordings, and instructor’s teaching reflections, we found that: (1) The instructor utilized student-centered pedagogy and emphasized the relevance between learning content and students’ future career and learning by doing; (2) interactive lectures, group discussions and group projects, leveraging technology (i.e., Nearpod and Google Doc), and physical space (i.e., whiteboards), were used to encourage collaborations and communications in ALCs; and (3) students perceived group discussions as helpful; and they also appreciated having sufficient space and movable chairs. Implications for future research are offered.
