International Student Teaching: A Bourdieuian Analysis of the Program and Teacher Candidates

Abstract

The rise of alternative teacher preparation programs focused on teaching narrow technical skills to new teachers undermines the development of teacher professional capital. When thinking ethically about the preparation of the next generation of teachers who will influence future generations of citizens in the United States, the prevailing narrative that university-based teacher education programs are broken and in need of replacement must be challenged. International student teaching as a component of university-based teacher training is one way to develop high quality beginning teachers. This study used a Bourdieuian analysis to examine teacher candidate access to student teach abroad and the knowledge gained from the international student teaching experience in light of larger contemporary social and political issues.
