Do You Love Them? An Arts-Based Narrative of Educator Subjectivity During a Time of Social Change

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this paper we use poetry, fiction and drawing to engage affectively with our teaching experiences on a first year social justice module at the University of the Free State. In recent years, student protests at South African institutions of higher education have highlighted and intensified a call for decolonised and transformed curricula and pedagogy. Within this context we foreground the entanglement of educator subjectivity, memory and experience in relation everyday professional and personal experiences. As such, we view the educator as a multitude or assembled subjectively that can affect and be affected in the educational encounter. Our aim is to move towards a transformative self-reflexive practice through which we can imagine how to become ‘different’ and do research ‘differently.
