A Mixed-Method Investigation of MOOC Instructor Design and Delivery to Facilitate Participants' Self-Directed Learning

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This mixed methods study examines instructors’ perceptions of self-directed learning (SDL) and the design of MOOCs to facilitate learners’ SDL through Zoom interviews of 22 MOOC instructors and a survey with 198 respondents. Results indicated that MOOC instructors considered SDL skills changeable, and that instructors can intentionally or unintentionally create a learning environment to facilitate such skills. MOOC instructors reported that they facilitated student SDL through motivating and fostering self-monitoring and self-management. To motivate students, MOOC instructors reported that they helped students to identify their personal learning needs, attempted to create a sense of learning community, etc. Finally, strategies to facilitate students’ self-management such as progress bars and self-monitoring (cognitive and metacognitive) were reported. Recommendations for future research were offered.
