Innovative Learning Spaces: Taking Active Learning Outside the Classroom

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study explored the impact of co-designed learning activities about Arduinos, an open-source hardware platform, in an Engineering Physics course, followed by a Hackathon event. Pre and post-activity surveys were administered to investigate students’ conceptual understanding and persistence in engineering robotics. Individual interviews with mentors and judges and student reflections about the Hackathon experience were also collected. Significant increases were observed in students’ understanding of computer programming and micro-computing platforms over time. Although challenges during the Hackathon event were related to technical and programming issues, students appreciated the collaborative problem-solving process. Mentors and judges encouraged creative risk-taking, but more of a conservative approach to problem solving. We discuss implications about co-developing learning modules and its integration within an engineering curriculum.
