Teacher Perspectives on Standardized Testing of Achievement in Ireland

Abstract

Recent policy changes in Ireland means that elementary schools are required to administer standardised tests in English reading and mathematics in 2nd, 4th and 6th grades, and to report results to parents, Boards of Management and the Department of Education and Skills. As of September 2017, the results are also used as part of the process in determining the allocation of special educational teaching resources to schools. The international literature suggests that when standardised test scores are used for purposes beyond internal planning, the associated sense of accountability can result in negative consequences. This paper presents findings with respect to how a random sample of 1,564 teachers felt about standardised tests and how they were using them in schools.
