The performance in mathematics has been related to different variables such as anxiety, or perceived competence towards the subject. This work is aimed to analyze if the effect of perceived competence for mathematics on actual mathematical performance can, in turn, be affected by levels of anxiety. Participants were 2365 students (12-15 years old). The academic performance of the students was recorded and all of them completed the Attitudes towards Mathematics Inventory (IAM), from which the variables anxiety towards mathematics and perceived competence in the subject were collected. The results of the mediation analysis revealed that anxiety partially mediates the effect of perceived competence on the actual mathematical performance outcome. The results are discussed in the light of past and future research.
