We live in a time of ecological crisis and social studies teachers have an important role to play in addressing the crisis. Too often marginal in the social studies curriculum—both historically and contemporarily—environmental issues (EI) must be taken up in social studies classrooms explicitly and frequently. This paper presents a framework for understanding social studies teaching about EI, stemming from a survey of over 1,000 Pennsylvania secondary social studies teachers.
