The FFT Literacy Reciprocal Reading program aimed to improve reading comprehension through two program variants: a whole-class (‘universal’) version for pupils aged 8-9 years old; and a targeted version for pupils aged 9-11 years old. Both programs lasted for one academic year and was delivered by trained teachers.
Ninety-eight schools (N=4,494 pupils) were randomized at school level to intervention or control groups to evaluate both versions of the program. The primary effects evaluated on pupils’ reading ability and reading comprehension as well as other secondary reading variables.
Children in the targeted group made the equivalent of 2 additional months’ progress in reading comprehension (g=.18), but no effect was found for the universal version.
