Teacher Hiring: A Synthesis of the Research

Abstract

Hiring quality teachers is crucial to school success and improvement (e.g., Grissom & Loeb, 2011) and demand for quality teachers appears to be increasing (e.g., Sutcher et al., 2016). Understanding the hiring research landscape may be even more pressing today for principals as they have more influence over hiring today than previous decades (e.g., Engel et al., 2018) and district leaders face greater competition for quality teachers. However, a research-based teacher hiring review or guide for principals, district administrators, policymakers, and researchers does not exist. This review of empirical teacher hiring research in an era of accountability helps fill this need and findings have critical implications for hiring practice, policy, and research.
