Teacher Exit Survey Development Through a Researcher-Practitioner Partnership: A Collaborative Approach

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Nearly half of all US public school teachers leave their classrooms before their fifth year (Ingersoll, Merrill, & May, 2014). Recognizing the local significance of this national issue, a researcher-practitioner partnership (RPP) commissioned a study on teacher retention in the fall of 2018. This paper shares the community-engaged research process employed by the RPP to develop and pilot a common exit survey of teachers from participating school districts at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. This development occurred with input from school district representatives serving on a study team as well as through ongoing conversations with human resource directors from each district, enhancing its conceptual and practical rigor.
