Challenging Our Positionalities as Chicanx Researchers and Activists: Working With and for Communities of Color

Abstract

This is a methodological paper presentation to illustrate the ways in which our identities and experiences, as bilingual Chicanx/Latinx scholars from the borderlands, informed and/or constrained our own interpretations at the time of data collection and data analysis. Grounded on Chicana Feminist Epistemology, we conducted an analysis of our researcher reflections and analytic memos during our individual research projects. Findings revealed that as Chicanx researchers we draw on lived experiences to better understand the experiences of our participants and to recognize our outsider perspectives when we struggle to understand. Engaging in this process provides insights to how our lived experiences as Chicanx/Latinx interpret and generate knowledge for and with communities of color.
