Young students lack opportunities to learn from male teachers. Our analyses show that male students are more likely to be assigned to male teachers in elementary schools. In addition, disciplined male students tend to be assigned to male teachers in the following year. Our findings are consistent with studies that show that male teachers experience high levels of pressure to discipline boys with behavioral issues and provide evidence that gendered expectations around discipline has a systematic effect on the composition of students assigned to male teachers.
