Factors Predicting College Student Retention at an Urban Institution: Analysis Exploring Causal Effects Using Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract

This study seeks to empirically investigate causal effects among factors, in particular those intervenable by the institution, leading to college student attrition. Social engagement, academic integration, institutional conditions, and financial pressures were selected based on a comprehensive theoretical model that combines Tinto’s Model revised with additional frameworks on college retention. Data collected from 620 full-time undergraduates at an urban research institution were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that institutional conditions, those which can be directly controlled by the university, are strong predictors of dropout intentions. Implications for institutions who serve similar populations are discussed.
