Students' and Instructors' Experiences of Humanizing Online Courses Across Higher Education (a Dual Perspective)

Abstract

As the popularity and convenience of online courses increases, it is important that the quality of those courses increases as well. This paper describes an ongoing study examining how two instructors worked to improve the learning experiences and literacy practices for online students through humanizing approaches to digital pedagogy. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to forward an empirically-grounded understanding of 1) the ways that principles of humanizing pedagogies can be enacted in online courses across different educational contexts, and 2) the reported experiences of students engaging in courses guided by these principles. As authors and instructors serving in different U.S. institutions, we analyze a diverse dataset to offer insights about undergraduate, masters, and PhD online courses.
