Collaborative School Counselor and School Leader Preparation

Abstract

School counselor principal (SCP) collaboration can promote positive school cultures where students reach academic goals, are emotionally healthy, and are prepared for postsecondary opportunities (Janson, Militello, & Kosine, 2008). As SCP relationships are vital in P-12 schools, this project focuses on this relationship in preservice preparation, through the development of a training framework. School-Based Social Capital Theory (Coleman, 1998; Lin, 2001) serves as the theoretical perspective for this project. In this theory, there are both micro and macro-level relationships working together to meet the current needs of P-12 students through promoting comprehensive school counseling (CSC), SCP collaboration, and community partnership. In this paper we detail the forces in joint preservice counselor and principal preparation that centers collaboration and social justice.
