Over the course of the 2018-19 academic year, we conducted a study looking at the impact of a one-year intensive mentorship program where 15 teacher candidates were individually paired with 15 high school students deemed “at risk” by their school. The study examines the program’s influence on the teacher candidates’ capacity to: think critically about issues of race in schools; build meaningful relationships with students from historically marginalized communities; and practice culturally sustaining teaching. Findings from this pilot indicate that participants grew in the first two areas, while the third area was difficult to assess fully.
