Previous research suggests that student mobility can affect achievement negatively. Unfortunately, however, mobility is often overlooked as a significant contributing factor for students’ early academic success, in particular for students whose home language is not English. Moreover, previous research has been hampered by how mobility is modeled using conventional multilevel modeling. To address this shortcoming, we utilize cross-classified multiple membership (CCMM) modeling to examine how mobility between schools affects children’s early reading and math development. Notably, this approach provides a distinct advantage over previous modeling approaches in accurately capturing the dynamic nature of different student mobility patterns (defined as the time students who change schools spend in each successive school) on their academic growth.
