Several states—including California and Massachusetts--have begun to use performance assessments to determine licensure qualification for school leadership. This study compares the initial educational leader assessment results and candidate and program director survey results for California’s voluntary 2018 and mandatory 2019 statewide field tests. Comparison to initial Massachusetts’ mandatory field trial results extends the analysis and findings to determine the possible benefits of the new statewide assessment for improving candidate readiness, career aspirations and possible career advancement. Both states’ mandatory field test results were promising and show the benefits of preparation program engagement in supporting candidates’ readiness.
